Journalists in India are not free to express their views. There is always pressure from somewhere and other. Unlike, Indian constitution has not guaranteed any special power to press.

In India, no political party or communal outfits can boast of respecting the freedom of the press.

There have been numerous instances of newspaper offices being ransacked and editors and journalists being roughed up by party cadres for publishing articles questioning their conduct or motives. This sorry state of affairs has increased in recent years.

Tolerance levels are declining and arrogance is all-pervasive. More often than not political power is used to further the cause of the power-hungry rather than to serve the masses.

Even after more than five decades of Independence, democracy in India has still not matured and press is supposed to be the watchdog of democracy. Unfortunately, it is given scant regard in a country which is regarded as the world’s largest democracy.

The situation can get even worse if we continue to elect people with criminal backgrounds and malicious intentions.

Journalists have been the target of violence in this country since the birth of press. The british formulated laws to keep the Indian press under their control and innumerable journalists were arrested. The second blow was during the emergency Indira Gandhi imposed upon us. Unfortunately journalists still have to face violence, censure and hostility from the government and other political parties.

Yes, that’s a very viable question to ask? With the conditions at present journalism seems to be a fluke quite driven my power and politics and the filthy game of hegemony!
