Thank God I am not residing in either of these cities. as for Delhi, on my recent visit to that place a couple of months ago, I too was astounded to see the fresh green change in their environment. at least they have managed to show some difference.

Kolkata is my hometown, and i am not exactly jumping happy to learn this piece of information. but i will have to admit i ahd suspected this during my visit to Delhi last year. the amount of greenery the city holds is simply mindblowing. almost every road is lined by trees on both sides, tall, luscious green trees. i remember having wondered how this green city could be the most polluted Indian city, as it was back then. i could see for myself Kolkata had about 25% of the greenery Delhi did.

I’m not surprised that kkta has upstaged
Delhi in air pollution. I’m suprised, though, at the fact that the busiest city (debatable, yea!) in India has taken so long to acquire this exalted position. Sarcasm aside, Delhi has done itself a favor by introducing CNG buses.

The efforts put in the by the concerned authorities in Delhi have shown its results. The Metropolitan has changed overwhelmingly over the last couple of years but then Kolkota has lost on the same front. The important thing now is that the people who succeeded in changing Delhi should come to the rescue of Kolkota. These our our metropolitan cities and people draw an imagination of our country from them so it is important to keep them juiced-up for they set our example elsewhere.

Well, Kolkata has always been a dreaded place for traffic and population. I being from kolkata am not at all happy to know that it has topped the list of polluted cities. Really wish that the government and the opposition parties do more than just throw mud on eachother’s reputation.

I just feel lucky to belong to a place like Shimla for it would possibly never top that list in a lifetime. No Sarcasm intended, but as I said Mayuri, if at all the kolkata government is concerned, it should take help from the people who successfully changed the scenario in Delhi. It would have to be long term planning as that is what Delhi chose to do and didn’t they succeed?

Wow this is rather shocking for Delhi was rated 4th most polluted in the world and for Kolkata to outdo it, must have been some feat to achieve! I wonder if Kolkata’s levels have gone up or Delhi’s levels have gone lower??

It is the occurrence of both Somya. Where Delhi has been showing marked improvement with a drop in pollution level, Kolkata has turned its back at the alarms raised and thus has consequently managed to climb the graph up.

Kolkata is kolkata u know ! See how CNG has brought a change in the pollution level over the years.... And if this was to be brought in kolkata, i swear this would be a miracle ... reason? the red bastion would resist any such attempt. barring few select areas in kolkata, i don’t see much of the greenery that can be witnessed in Delhi. Rather than getting into ideological differences, the political outfits should take this as a warning for global warming... BTW, I am taking to deaf n dumbos??

All that Kolkata needs is political will to turn things around. The transport minister himself has hold over good old polluting ’private’ bus owner’s syndicate. The public transport is badly in need of modern less polluting safe fleet of vehicles. The traffic police is highly corrupted and they never book emission offenders. Needless to comment on Pollution Control Board, which does nothing apart from bringing out annual reports and giving permissions to industry and fairs without inspecting the site. There is no hope...

In either case then Kolkata needs to be aware and if Delhi has dropped down on pollution scale then may be kolkata should take a leaf out of their book and take a measure or two themselves!

Kolkata certainly needs to pull up it’s socks and do something about it’s pollution levels. Newer types of public transport can be encouraged in a city like Kolkata which was the pioneer in the underground rail system for urban poplulace, in India.

Well, to all present here. Underground rail system is the backbone of the city. But, it is not altogether cheap. Again, I would like to mention that the rural folks use the passenger trains for their commution. And, the city needs a direct hit on the eye that this city of joy is now turning into a city of smoke so that atleast some amount of responsibility is expected out of them. And the government, I better not comment!

shall we attribute it to corruption of lack of public awareness ?

Having travelled there i was worried about the pervasiveness of pollution - indoors and out. Vikas -what do you recommend? Having just gotten a whole home air cleaner here in Calif. I think it is ironic that the outdoor air in the US. is actually getting cleaner while the air indoors is getting more polluted.
