Strokes are the second most common cause of deaths and the commonest cause of severe disability. Now a study has shown that deficiency of Vitamin B12, usually seen in vegetarians, can predispose a person to strokes much more than the usual risk factors...

At first I got shocked with the news, because I am vegetarian. I have stopped eating non-veg food till I was very small. So many family members and friends threaten me with negative consequences of it. But I don’t like non-veg food’s smell. What can I do?

But you know, many vegan foods are also supplemented with B12. Vitamin B12’s primary functions are in the formation of red blood cells and the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. The only reliable unfortified sources of vitamin B12 are meat, dairy products and eggs. Non-veg foods contain most of it.

Scientists are making research into possible plant food sources of B12. Fermented soy products, seaweeds and algae have all been proposed as possible sources of B12. Good sources of vitamin B12 for vegetarians are dairy products or free-range eggs. ½ pint of milk (full fat or semi skimmed) contains 1.2 µg. A slice of vegetarian cheddar cheese (40g) contains 0.5 µg. A boiled egg contains 0.7 µg. Fermentation in the manufacture of yoghurt destroys much of the B12 present. Boiling milk can also destroy much of the B12.

Yeast extracts, veggie burger mixes, textured vegetable protein, soy milks, vegetable and sunflower margarines, and breakfast cereals are good sources of vitamin B12.

Its just opposite you are saying. All nonvegetarian items contains heavy amount of cholestroll, fatty acids and heavy molecular alkanes which are the root cause of heart attack and cancer.

These studies are funny :P, they keep contradicting themselves.

Go to PETA’s youtube channel and there somewhere you’ll find a video saying completely opposite.

It seems like veg and non-veg food both are bad for health :P

The studies are not contradictory; he way they are presented by lay people are erroneous. All such studies are controlled and often double bound. Eg. an Indian PhD student studying the effect of triglycerides on atherosclerosis may find that taking ice cream may increase strokes while another researcher studying the effect of ice-creams’ calcium content may find that it is beneficial to the bones in patients with high triglycerides. The media may report first that ice-creams are bad for heart patients and then another day report that they are good for the same group. The reports show the ignorance of the reporter rather than the PhD students. Another example: all medicines can have anaphylactic reactions. But when say, a dose of paracetamol suddenly kill with first regular dose any patient, some news hungry media-man may trash the doctor. That is because, the former has no idea of basic science. He just wants a story for money. So, such reports in the popular media are just this...a lot of words.

I probably meant that these researches are just researches. They dont apply to everyone and they shouldn’t be generalized, thats it.

And isnt it funny that these reports never consider other facts?

I mean, lets take you example for example :P

I think that these people should have used previous researches and compared them to give final conclusion because looking at one side of the research can make people conclude things wrongly

http://www.yogsandesh.org/articles/67/1/Non-vegetarian-Food-Healthy-or-Unhealthy/

I do back you up with above link clearly suggesting that vegetarian food is more healthy, light for digestion, and has comparatively less cholesterol and fatty acids.

So, theories after theories just mislead us to the point where we may turn to be dependent on air and water only- neither veg nor NON as Nishant says.

I guess one should stay vegetarian for reasons that are less selfish like the pain that the animals have to go through while getting slaughtered. I would stay vegetarian even if it meant risking my health. However, vegetarian is a healthy lifestyle. Probably this research was conducted by an association of meat producers who fear losing their business.

Purely non-vegetarian diet or purely vegetarian diet is absolutely ant-nature for human beings. Our body is designed in such a way that we can take both non-veg and veg food alike but not designed to be on one diet or the other for the entire life. We have both canine teeth found in carnivores and molars found in herbivores. We have large and small intestines and we cannot digest cellulose that is found in the fibres in veg food because we have a vestigial appendix.

There are many fat soluble vitamins that is critical for the body. Besides, vegetarians especially in India take a hell lot of unhealthy food dipped in various types of oil and clarified butter. They are the root cause of cardio-vascular diseases and obesity. Not taking meat and fish means deficiency in vital minerals as well like Omega 3 fatty acids etc. People who live on vegetarian diet crave for more salt and high sodium intake is the primary cause of high blood pressure that often leads to strokes.

These studies cannot be completely discarded. The theory that smoking leads to cancer was completely discarded about three decades back and was not held responsible for any heart ailments. But it is not established that smoking kills. High protein intake is also linked to cancer. Red meat is unhealthy. But hardly there is any healthier food that fish, eggs and white meat.

Green leafy vegetables medium cooked in extra virgin olive oil with one serving of ham, two half boiled eggs, a bowl of cereals, two big chunks of tuna and a fruit salad makes for a very healthy breakfast. Lunch should not be larger than the breakfast and it should be balanced. Dinner should be taken early and should be light. Spaghetti is fine for dinner, but just a little. Supper should be just bread crumbs and soup with chunks of organically grown tomatoes thrown in. Also don't forget to drink at least 4 cups of black tea and two rounds of your favorite whisky or two glasses of red wine. Milk is poison. Don't smoke. You will live more than 100 years.

LOL... People who are vegetarian for religious purposes are the stupidest creatures on earth. They take many lower animals every day with their food and of course many medicines and food items are made with live animal extracts.

The Jains in India who cover their mouth with a cloth flap to 'save' insects and microbes from getting killed by them should know that there are millions of parasites living in your body. Plain stupids.

Please refrain from irking religious sentiments like ”People who are vegetarian for religious purposes are the stupidest creatures on earth.” The article is focusing on the pros n cons of being a veggie or non-veggie from health point of view. Get that?

Absolutely right. Owais, your words may hurt many-“People who are vegetarian for religious purposes are the stupidest creatures on earth”. We are not discussing about who is eating what for what reason.

No one can give guaranty that vegetarian or non-vegetarian foods alone are good for health. All are subject to various diseases in the old age. But we must be careful that our diet contains all types of vitamins and minerals. Of course, as far as practicable. One should not take any food by force, just for the sake of health. It will not be beneficial; rather it may have negative impacts. But if a person is purely vegetarian, than she/ he should eat enough of milk products. It’s necessary. Green vegetables have too much of vitamins, but less of energy and calcium.
